Background

Experience

My path into software engineering grew out of hands-on work in healthcare and real-world operational problems. I’ve gone from pharmacy workflows to building production Rails applications that support veterinary labs.

Software Engineer · Trace First

Duration: 2023 – Present

I originally joined Trace First as an apprentice while completing my BSc in Computing for Industry. After finishing my apprenticeship and graduating with First-Class Honours, I was re-employed as a full-time Software Engineer.

Day-to-day, I work across a large Ruby on Rails codebase with extensive JavaScript and React, building and refining CoreOne for Labs - software used by veterinary laboratories primarily across the USA.

My work ranges from implementing new features and improving UX, to debugging tricky production issues and modernising legacy areas of the system. A big focus for me is keeping the codebase maintainable while shipping changes that make a real difference to lab workflows.

Pharmacy Assistant · Eden Pharmacy, Portadown

Duration: January 2020 – October 2023

At Eden Pharmacy, I supported a busy team of pharmacists and dispensers, helping patients at the counter and working behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly.

During this time I also developed an internal stock management system to monitor and control drug movement between branches. The system included live reporting to track inventory levels and improve visibility on where stock was and how it was being used.

This role gave me a grounded understanding of healthcare operations, which heavily influences how I design and build software for real-world environments today.
